I have worked with wood my whole life as my dad was a carpenter, and I was always trying to build things even as a young boy. For me, wood working has always been a practical thing even though I call it my hobby, but the things I have typically built were items that we needed around the house--I could make quality items for less money (free) than from a furniture store.
Professionally, I am a forester, which brings me into contact with a lot of unique pieces of wood, with black cherry being my favorite.
All of my wood comes from the logging jobs that I manage, and without exception, it is wood that is not marketable, so when I gather my wood, in essence, it is rescued wood.
Probably my favorite part of working with wood is that you never know what is going to be revealed once you get into the wood--uncovering the hidden beauty! Black cherry is out of its range in NC, so the trees are slow growing with fantastic figure.
My studio is a 12x20 3-sided building. This is where I store my wood and run my lathe. It gets a little cold during the winter and hot during the summer, but a space heater between my feet, during the winter, keeps me plenty warm. During the summer, I keep a fan going--it helps that adjacent to my studio is a big maple tree that provides shade throughout the day.
